Product Information
Where do you source your materials?
We source high quality, sustainable materials from businesses we trust.
Our core wood options (ash, oak, and walnut) are kiln-dried, FSC-certified hardwoods from local lumber suppliers. Wood for our Limited Collection is salvaged from various sources, such as lumber mills with small offcuts, woodworkers looking to downsize, and urban trees that sadly must come down.
Our metal parts are machined locally and our glass is hand-blown in Vancouver, BC.
Due to limited availability in Canada, electrical components are sourced from the United States.
Our premium LED light bulbs come from Tala, which is based in the UK.
What finishes do you use on the wood?
We use Osmo Polyx hardwax oil to finish our wood products. Osmo contains a blend of vegetable oils and waxes combined with a small amount of low-odour solvent. It is completely non-toxic and food-safe when cured (though we wouldn’t recommend eating off of our light fixtures!) and leaves a beautiful glowing (but not too shiny) surface.
Do wood light fixtures pose a fire hazard?
While wood is certainly a combustible material, our products have been tested and certified to be safe with the light bulbs we provide. If you need to replace the bulb, please check the maximum wattage listed on our website or the product nameplate. We always recommend using LED bulbs for their low running temperature and long life.
Are your products certified for electrical safety?
Yes! Depending on the product you may see either a UL or CSA sticker. Light fixtures that have a brass or painted metal housing around the lamp socket are pre-certified to UL (US/CAN) standards. All of our other fixtures are tested through the CSA SPE-1000 field labelling process by an independent testing facility.
Do you provide light bulbs? What if I need to replace them?
We provide premium LED light bulbs from Tala with every light fixture. Pendants and table lamps come with a standard E26 bulb. Sconces (except Magpie) come with a G9 bulb and handmade blown-glass shade. If you need a replacement bulb, please contact us and we can send you a new one, or you can find them online from many retailers.
Are your light fixtures dimmable?
All of our light fixtures and included bulbs are compatible with dimming.
Plug-in pendants, sconces, and table lamps have a thumb switch without a dimmer. We recommend using a dimmer plug that can be controlled via smartphone or remote switch, available at many hardware stores.
For hardwired fixtures, head over to Tala for a list of recommended dimmers.

What are your lead times?
Items in our Limited Collection are ready-made and ship within 5 business days. Made-to-Order products usually ship in 6-8 weeks, though we reserve the right to extend lead times for large quantities. For fully custom orders, please contact us for estimated lead times.
How do I place a custom order?
Light fixtures from our Made-to-Order Collection have several customization options, with shipping automatically calculated at checkout. You are welcome to add a note with your order for special requests and we will do our best to accommodate them. If you’re looking for something that’s not listed on our website, send us an email and we can put together a quote for a fully custom order.
Can I bring you a piece of wood to turn into a light?
Absolutely! We would love to work with you to turn a special piece of wood into a one-of-a-kind lighting piece. Wood species that are great for turning include ash, oak, walnut, maple, arbutus (madrone), and fruit trees such as cherry, apple, and pear. We have chosen not to work with most softwoods (such as pine and fir) or woods that have been imported from outside North America (such as teak and mahogany, unless they are reclaimed). Unfortunately we cannot accept pieces of wood that have been finished with paint or lacquer, have any bits of metal embedded in them (such as nails or staples), and/or have large holes or cracks. Smaller cracks can be filled with a clear or black epoxy resin, creating a striking visual effect!
The process for working with green wood (ie. wood that has been freshly cut) takes longer than with air-dried or kiln-dried lumber, as we must allow the moisture content to stabilize before working it to its final form. This process can take anywhere from weeks to years, though we have a few tricks to help it dry out faster, so don't hesitate to get in touch early! We do our best to prevent the wood from cracking as it dries, though due to the natural unpredictability of drying wood, we cannot accept responsibility for cracks forming during or after production.
What is your shipping policy?
Shipping charges for your order will be automatically calculated and displayed at checkout. Once your order has been shipped, you will receive an email notification containing the carrier information and tracking number.
Free local pickup is available at our Rock Bay studio. We will contact you via email to notify you when your order is ready for pickup. Please note that pickup is by appointment only - we can’t guarantee that we will be in the studio if you drop by without an appointment.
At this time, we do not ship internationally outside of Canada and the United States.
What is your return policy?
As each of our light fixtures is carefully handmade, we do not accept returns or exchanges unless the item is defective or damaged. Please inspect your order upon receipt and contact us within 5 business days if there are any issues. We will always do our best to make it right. Return shipping costs are the responsibility of the customer. Once we’ve received and inspected your return, you’ll be refunded to your original payment method within 10 business days.
Installation & Maintenance
How do I install a hardwired light fixture?
Our hardwired fixtures come with the necessary mounting hardware as well as installation instructions for wiring into a 120V AC circuit. If you’re unsure how to safely install a light fixture, please consult a licensed electrician.
How do I hang a plug-in pendant light?
There are plenty of creative ways to hang a plug-in pendant light, but the simplest way is to use a swag hook attached to the ceiling. Swag hooks can be found at most hardware stores - be sure to check the weight rating and use an appropriate drywall anchor if you’re not drilling into a ceiling joist. For swag hooks with a little extra “swag,” check out our friends over at Color Cord Company.
Can I install a light fixture in a damp or wet location?
Our fixtures are rated for indoor use in dry locations only. This includes areas not normally subject to moisture, such as kitchens, living spaces, hallways, and bathrooms that are well-ventilated.
We don’t recommend putting our light fixtures outside or in damp or wet locations, such as inside a shower or above a bathtub. Please consult a licensed electrician if you are unsure whether you need a damp-rated or wet-rated fixture for your specific application.
What are your care instructions?
Should the wood surface begin to appear dry or rough, lightly scuff the wood with a fine, 320 grit sandpaper in the direction of the grain. Apply a thin coat of hardwax oil finish (we recommend Osmo Polyx Satin), wait 5 minutes, then buff with a microfibre cloth until the surface is no longer tacky. Allow to dry for 24 hours before re-installing the light fixture.
Satin (lacquered) brass and painted metal may be cleaned with a damp microfibre cloth. Do not use abrasives or cleaners as this can damage the finish.
Raw (waxed) brass may begin to patina over time. We think this adds to the living character of the piece! However, should you wish to restore the original brass finish, you can use household brass polish and wax as directed on the packaging.
Our matte glass sconce globes use a natural sealant of beeswax and olive oil. Clean the glass with a dry microfibre cloth - do not use abrasives or cleaners. You can wipe on a thin coat of olive oil if the surface starts to dull.
To rejuvenate a fuzzy or frayed cloth-covered cord, first be sure to turn off the power at the electrical service panel or unplug the cord. Use a heat gun held 4-8 inches away from the cord until the frayed fibres shrink away. A heat gun can also be used to soften a stiff cord that won’t hang straight - just be careful not to stay in one spot for too long and risk melting the fabric covering.
Do you offer a warranty on your products?
All of our products have a limited one-year warranty on manufacturing defects. Please note that items damaged during shipping must be reported to us within 5 business days from the delivery date so that we can notify the carrier.
Please email us to initiate a warranty request and include the following information:
- Your name and contact information
- Your order number or proof of purchase within the last 12 months
- The product serial number (7-digit number located on the back of the canopy for hardwired fixtures or along the cloth-covered cord for plug-in fixtures)
- Photos of the item, clearly showing the defect if visible
- A brief description of the issue
At our discretion, we will arrange for the repair or replacement of the defective product. We do not accept responsibility for damages outside of our control, including but not limited to mishandling, improper installation, or using a bulb that is higher than the recommended wattage.
Different wood species may become darker or lighter over time, especially when exposed to direct sunlight. Natural aging of wood is not considered a manufacturing defect. Please refer to our care instructions for refreshing surface finishes.
